In Wisconsin, the general state law is that bicycles must ride on the street, not on a sidewalk.  Insurance companies for drivers of vehicles that strike bicycles crossing streets from sidewalks often reference this law to dispute the claim of the injured bicyclist.  However, the state law also says local municipalities can change the law by creating areas where bikes are required to instead be on the sidewalk.  Much of Grand Avenue in Wausau is one of those locations.  Every municipality is different, however, and the local code must be reviewed in each case to determine whether the bike should have been on the road or sidewalk.  If you have been injured in a bike/automobile accident, a personal injury attorney can help you with your claim.  Call Bremer & Trollop Law Offices for a free consultation.
